S 1 Ep 9 - Improving Physician Wellness with Cheryl True, MD
Wednesday Jun 26, 2019
Wednesday Jun 26, 2019
In this episode, I talk to Dr. True about the important subject of physician wellness and burnout! Most people do not know that burnout is an official diagnosis according to the World Health Organization!
Dr. True describes herself as "I am a Midwesterner, who was going to be an artist, a jockey (until I grew!), a veterinarian, a researcher until finally landing in medicine. I worked for about 6 years before Med school. I thought I’d be a pathologist but ended up loving Family Medicine. Did residency in my community, and stayed here for a PCP job. I loved working with patients. Was in an independent clinic, saw patients in hospital & nursing homes. It was okay until the electronic health record came along & changed my relationship with my job. And I had become a pill pusher - rather than knowing how to help the root causes, I only treated symptoms. Very frustrating. Now I worked all day, worked all night, and was miserable. For 5 years I struggled to find a balance where none existed. I started looking at other options. I attended 3 conferences that taught me that Medicine could be different. An Ideal Medicine retreat, PriMed, and my first Lifestyle Medicine conference in 2013. I was hooked, and haven’t looked back. I got additional training, learned amazing things, and met awesome people - my Tribe. My interests are in Lifestyle Medicine & physician Well-being. I want to save the world - and my community is a place to start. I’ve become involved, I’m happy, I am changing lives in different ways than what I thought I’d be doing when I graduated."
Dr. Cheryl True is board-certified in family medicine and lifestyle medicine, is a CHIP facilitator, Walk-with-a- Doc organizer, and started Heartland Rooted, PlantPure Pod, a non-profit in Davenport, IA.
